Puggy Pearson, RIP

By other1 on 04/14 at 06:29 PM More

The gambling world lost one of its great legends this week when Puggy Pearson died at the age of 77. Puggy won three bracelets at the 1973 WSOP, including the main event. More importantly, he is the father of modern poker tournaments. He first came up with the idea of freezout (elimination) tournaments and told his friend, the legendary Nick The Greek, about the idea. Nick later took the idea to his good friend Benny Binion, and, well, the rest is history. Puggy was known in recent years for always delivering his rendition of ‘Roving Gambler’, one of the greatest gambling songs ever, at the start of every WSOP main event final table.

Overheard At Foxwoods

By other1 on 04/07 at 03:26 PM More

One of the Cardplayer reporters came over to the table which had featured Mimi Tran, John D’Agastino and Nick Schulman along with our own bengiswex. The reporter asked Dags ‘Where is Schulman?’ to which he replied ‘he played bad and is gone’.

Zing!

Update: I saw Nick last night. I decided not to try and start trouble by relaying this story to him, although it would have been really fun.

The 2006 Foxwoods Poker Classic

By other1 on 04/05 at 09:56 PM More

Our very own bengiswex is playing in the Foxwoods Poker Classic starting at 11am tomorrow. In Pauly style I’ll be (close to) live blogging as phone updates are called in to me. Sadly I won’t be making the trip after all as a work obligation has come up and I can’t be out of town this weekend.

Update (12pm) : Cards went in the air at 11:10am. Everyone started with 20k and the blinds are 25/50.

Update (12:45pm) : How’s this for a starting table.. Mimi Tran, John D’Agastino and Nick (Takeover) Schulman. That’s the table bengiswex is at. He reports that that there are about 410 total people in the main event. He has 20150 chips at the first break. In the very first hand of the tournament he tangled with Dags and lost 2200 but he got them back from others.

Update (2:45pm) : The official count is 431 people. First prize is over $1.3 Million. 40 places will pay. No new upates from our man.

Update (3:30pm) : Nick Schulman was eliminated when his JJ ran in to AA. Sadly it wasn’t bengiswex’s AA. He is still hanging in there though with about 10k in chips.

Update (5:00pm) : bengiswex is out. :( The only details I have so far are ‘it was a bad beat’. I’ll post more when I hear.

Final Update (10:00pm) : Here are the details of the bustout..
Hero in late position has 8400.
Villian in SB has a big stack.
Folds around to hero who raises from 200 to 600 with A2o.
SB calls and it is heads up.
Flop comes A26 rainbow.
Villian bets 1500, Hero calls.
Turn is a J, Villian bets 2000, hero raises all in for 6300.
Villian thinks for a long time and calls. He shows Ace-Ten.

River...?

You know it was a Ten. :(

I have to cancel on poker, I'm too busy playing poker

By AceJack on 04/02 at 12:17 AM More

(AKA, why AceJack stood other1 up for a poker trip tonight)

I told other1 that I would write an article the next time that I made a final table.  Joke was on him; it took me 3 months to get back to one.  No, it wasn’t one of those million dollar guaranteed tournies, but it still counts.
No matter what the cost and how much I won, it was nice to be back at one.  Would have been nicer to win, but I came in a little short stacked.  With 8 people left and with no one else in the hand, I decided to steal the bb from the sb.  I had pocket 2s and was thinking that since I hadn’t played too many hands at he final table that the bb wouldn’t call.  All that thinking was moot since the bb had pocket aces.  For the record, I made the wheel and the bb made Aces full of 3s.
Hopefully you’ll hear from me again before July 1st…

If you haven’t noticed. I’ve switched to a new look. I decided the old one was too busy. Frankly it gave me a headache. So I’ve gone to a much cleaner and simpler look. Hope everone likes it.

Sign #863 That You Play Too Much Poker

By other1 on 03/20 at 03:56 PM More

When reading real estate listings you see ‘Great EV location!’ and are amazed someone would refer to a location as having ‘great expected value’. I spent way too long thinking about this before I realized it was in fact a ‘great east village’ location.

Sneak Preview

By other1 on 03/18 at 03:42 AM More

I went to check out the space today where a friend of mine is opening a poker club. There is still a bunch of work to do, but it is shaping up nicely. It’s also walking distance from my work and my home, which is either awesome or scary depending on how you look at it. Anyway, it’s probably best not to say any more right now. When the time is right I’ll have more details.
