Starting Over

I’ve taken a long break from poker, and more importantly, gambling in general. At the risk of using a cliche, I’d gotten in too deep. I was gambling too much, too high, and it was taking a bad toll on my life.

But I’m back. I’ve got things under control now, and I’m working my way back in playing low stakes poker. Mostly 1/2 at a new local club, so the blog is back, or will be shortly, in full force.

Texas No Fold 'Em

    I’m in Southern Florida visiting my mom. She happens to live pretty close to the Hard Rock Seminole. I’ve never had a chance to check it out before even though she’s lived here for a few years and I’ve visited a million times.. Anyway, I finally got around to it tonight. There are some esoteric laws that limit gambling in the state even on the indian reservations. Basically, the biggest bet you can have is $2, so the Hard Rock offers 1/2, 2/2 and 2/2 w/ an ante, all limit. For what it’s worth, there is also a bad beat jackpot.

    To make up for the limitation on NL games they offer lots of tournaments. There was a multi table going that had started earlier in the day and they have SNGs going all the time. The SNGs run from $50+$15 (Yes, that’s an INSANE rake) to a whopping $1k+$50. To my suprise the SNGs that went off most often were the $240s and $1050s. The insane rake isn’t limited to SNGs. On the cash games there is a 10% rake which seemed to be uncapped. They also take $1 out of every pot for the bad beat jackpot.
    Between the high rake and the ridiculous play I would say the 1/2 game I was playing would be almost impossible to beat on a consistent basis. There were normally 7 or 8 players to the flop with most of them going ot at least the turn. 99% of hands went a showdown and thenre were often 4 or more playres showing down hands. It’s suck out city. Given the small stakes it’s almost impossible to drive out draws and I saw way too many bad 2 pairs or gutshots or crappy flushes and assorted other hands that had no business sticking around going to the river and winning.
    I got dealt only two premium hands the 3 or so hours I played and they were back to back. I had Kings in early position. I raised and got like 4 callers. Rag rainbow flop.. bet, raise, raise, cap. Three players to the turn which is another rag. Bet, call, call. The river is, of course, an ace. I check, the guy I figured would be the jackass with the ace bets, and the third guy reluctantly calls. I also reluctantly call. I show my Kings, the other reluctant caller shows his tens.. the jackass triumphantly shows his A5o which was nothing until the river. Nice hand sir! (yes, my eyes are rolling) On the next hand I got dealt black aces. The action was much the same with several people calling multiple bets down to the river. Amazingly the aces, which didn’t improve, were good that time and I made back most of what I lost on the kings.
    I’m going to try and get back tomorrow and see how the SNG action is, but I definitely wouldn’t play 1/2 again. I might try 2/2 to see if it’s any closer to real poker, but I doubt it is.

    I’ve found my new game. I spit on face cards! Wheel me baby!

    I probably could have made the final table if I hadn’t self destructed a bit at the end and chased more than I should have, but all in all I’m pretty happy considering I play the game like once every few months.

The Poll Remains Hypothetic

    Last year I came somewhat close to winning a $2000 WSOP package for a preliminary event on Full Tilt. I decided this year to try again. The plan is to play $6 SNGs for $24+2 tournament tickets and then play the (almost nightly) $24+2 WSOP satellites. Well, I played the first last night. I came close, but no cigar.

    Despite no money I did have a lot of fun. I’m definitely inspired to play more Razz. In fact, I think I’m going to play the cash 10:30 tournament tonight. I’d like to say I did well in the tournament without even really knowing how to play Raz, but I skimmed the chapter on Razz in Super/System during the tournament, so I guess that’s not technically true any more.

Oh No Barbaro!

    Well the Preakness definitely didn’t go as planned. I, and most of the world, were looking for Barbaro to win. I bet several exactas with Barbaro over the assorted likely contenders, and had just a few other bets that didn’t include Barbaro. I had a bad feeling from the moment Barbaro broke out of the gate early. He was loaded back in pretty smoothly though and it seemed like maybe all would be ok. Then the unthinkable happened.. just a few strides out of the starting gate something was obviously terribly wrong and the jockey Prado pulled up and stopped him. Trainer Matz was shown running out of the stands to go attend to his horse. The race continued.. For a short moment it looked like one of my few bets that didn’t involve Barbaro, the Like Now - Sweetnorthernsaint exacta might pull through for a nice payday, but it wasn’t to be as Like Now faded all the way to second to last of the horses that finished.

    After the race all eyes were on Barbaro who stood on the track on 3 legs gingerly holding up his back right foot in obvious pain. I didn’t know there were horse ambulances, but there are, and one took him away. He was examined at the track where they found he broke his leg above and below the ankle. He was rushed to the University of Pennsylvania for surgery. Unfortunately this is the tupe of injury for a horse that is very dangerous. If the leg is too badly injured, and blood flow is cut off to the foot, surgery might not be possoble. Even if surgery is an option, if Barbaro is unable to stand after surgery it’s almost impossible that he would recover and they would probably have to euthenize him. This was definitely not the way the race was supposed to go.

    Please heed this advice from the world champion of Triple Draw..

    On Party you kind of have an excuse, because their software is retarded now and doesn’t make you bet even amounts, but if you are on Stars, and you bet 1234 because you think its funny. Or if you bet 1499 because your apponent has 1500 left.. or any other retarded amount, you are a donkey.

Continuing A Theme

    I’ve had a pretty good run recently of betting on things I know nothing about. I won my bet on Crash for best picture, having never seen it or the favorite I picked it to upset, Brokeback Mountain. I also won my bet on George Clooney at the Oscars.. Didn’t see that movie either. Then last weekend I won my bet on Barbaro to win the Kentucky Derby. A bet I placed before it was even known if Barbaro was going to race in the Kentucky Derby.
    Continuing the theme, a few months ago I placed a bet on Elliot Yamin to win American Idol. I had never watched a single episode of this season, and I still haven’t. Yet, here I am sitting on a nice bet for the longshot to win and he is now one of the final three contendors. How am I picking these things? Research. It’s amazing what you can learn on the internet. I don’t need to handicap horses, or movies, or singers.. thats a lot of work. All I need to do is read the opinions of lots of other people who have done the work for me and form a consensus opinion.

    Oh yeah, dumb luck doesn’t hurt either. Below you’ll see the chart for Elliot to win. I bought at about 9, so I’ve already made a profit if I sell, but I’m in for the 91 point gain, not the 7 point gain. We’ll see..
